Rehabilitation of Bridge No. 00059 I-95 “Yankee Doodle Bridge” over Norwalk River and Hendricks Ave. Norwalk, Connecticut
Reasons for Project include a Structurally Deficient Superstructure, a “Poor” Condition Rating and to extend the bridge’s service life.
The goals of this project are to provide a safe structure for the traveling public by rehabilitating the Yankee Doodle Bridge. The construction work will be performed with minimal disturbance to traveling public, in a timely manner with effective use of funds.
The existing seven (7) span structure was built across the Norwalk River in 1958. It is 911 feet long, 121 feet 8 inches wide and carries four lanes of traffic in each direction. The estimated Average Daily Traffic (ADT) is approximately 149,400 vehicles. The superstructure consists of built-up welded steel plate girders and the substructure consists of cast-in-place concrete abutments and piers.
The proposed rehabilitation includes repair and painting of the deteriorated and deficient structural steel, replacement of the navigation lighting, repair box beam approach guide rail, replace deck expansion joints, repair of the underside deck and substructure concrete, stabilization of the west abutment embankment and install a sedimentation pond, upgrades to the parapet and median barrier, maintenance of the existing sidewalk, diamond grinding of the latex modified concrete wearing surface and clean of the bridge deck scuppers and replacement of the bridge drainage. The entire structure will be encapsulated during construction work and there is no danger of falling debris.
Construction impacts to the I-95 traveling public shall be minimal, as lane and shoulder closures will be limited to off-peak hours. Lane widths will also be reduced to 11 feet during construction. All substructure work can occur without interrupting I-95. There may also be some minor impacts to the navigable channel of the Norwalk River during construction that will be coordinated with the Coast Guard. No channel closures are anticipated. Work is not expected to impact Hendricks Avenue.
Environmental concerns will be considered as this project is partially located within a FEMA Special Flood Hazard Zone AE. During localized field painting of the structure, surface preparation debris will be 100% contained, collected, removed and properly disposed. Best Management Practices will also be utilized to handle sedimentation control during construction
The project is commencing in October of 2018 and is anticipated to be completed in November of 2019. This work will be continuous through the winter and will require coordination with other planned projects including:
- 102-295 Reconstruction of Median and Resurfacing of I-95 east of the Yankee Doodle Bridge
- Project 102-348 may be combined with 102-295 in a single construction contract
